Sacha Inchi has been used by the Incas of Peru as a source of healthy food for over 3000 years however it has only been recently that the US and Europe granted approval to Sacha Inchi to be imported on a regular basis.
In October 2014 the US Food and Drug Administration granted “Generally Recognized as Safe” or GRAS status to Sacha Inchi. This allows Sacha Inchi to be imported into the Untied States without every batch being tested. Here is the approval document.

It is an interesting look into the benefits and uses for Sacha Inchi. It is long but it has tons of great information for those interested in the more technical aspects of food approval and the associated health benefits.
Any food not regularly used in Europe prior to 15 May 1997 is classified as a Novel Food. Sacha Inchi was not in regular use in Europe prior to 1997 therefore it had to go through the Novel Food approval process. After an exhaustive approval process Sacha Inchi was approved as a Novel Food in late 2013.

Sacha Inchi was first imported into Japan in 2006 and is sold as a specialty food.
In January 2013 the Chinese Ministry of Food approved Sacha Inchi Oil as a "New Resource Food".
Sacha Inchi is sold widely in other parts of Asia including Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Singapore.
